This visa is designed for international students who want to study a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree in Australia.

1. Who is this visa for?

This visa is for you if you want to do one of the following:

  • apply for your first student visa

  • renew your student visa

  • apply to join a family member who is in Australia on a student visa.

 

2. What does the visa let me do?

With this visa:

  • you can study in Australia

  • eligible dependant family members can accompany you to Australia

  • when you have commenced your course of study in Australia, you can work up to 20 hours per week while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.

  • your family members can work up to 20 hours per week provided you have commenced your course of study in Australia. Once you commence your Masters or PhD your family members can work unlimited hours.
    Note:
    If you have been granted Student visa before 26 April 2008 you and your dependent family members may need to apply separately for Permission to Work.

  • your partner can study in Australia for up to three months.

Note: If your partner wants to study for more than three months they must apply for their own student visa. The application can be made in Australia.

You must uphold your visa conditions while studying and living in Australia or your visa may be cancelled and you may have to leave Australia.

  • You must remain enrolled in a course registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). You must maintain satisfactory attendance in your course as required by your education provider. Also, you must make satisfactory course progress for each study period.
  • If you want to change your level of qualification, you will need to apply for a new student visa because your visa subclass will change.
  • You must advise your education provider of your home address within seven days of arriving in Australia. Also, if you change your address during your stay in Australia, you must advise your education provider within seven days.
  • you cannot apply to stay in Australia beyond the date specified on your visa, except in extremely limited circumstances.
  • If you are under 18 years of age you must maintain your accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements for the duration of your visa or until you turn 18. If your welfare arrangements change after your visa has been granted you must inform the department of these changes.
  • You must maintain enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your partner and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia.
  • Any family members of school age (between 5 and 18 years) living in Australia must attend school in Australia.
  • You must maintain health insurance for you and your family members while in Australia.

Your family members must:

  • remain a member of your family for the duration of their stay in Australia
  • have adequate financial support
  • maintain adequate health cover
  • work no more than 20 hours per week unless you have commenced a postgraduate degree (Masters or PhD), in which case your dependent family members can work full time
  • not work before you have commenced the course
  • attend school if they are of school age.

This visa is designed for international students applying to study in Australia and whose main course of study is one of the following:

  • Bachelor degree
  • associate degree
  • graduate certificate
  • graduate diploma
  • Masters by coursework.

You must meet the following specific requirements to be eligible for this visa.
  • You must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course to be eligible for this visa.
  • You must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for yourself, your partner and your dependent children for the duration of your stay in Australia. You must also have enough money to support your partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with you to Australia.
  • You must be of good health and character
  • You must have health insurance while in Australia (Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)).
  • You must provide your academic records to show that you have successfully completed an undergraduate degree or equivalent or academic reports and previous records of attendance to show that you satisfied the course requirements.
  • You must provide the evidence about your required level of English.
  • You have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government, or have arranged to repay any outstanding debts to the Australian Government.
  • You must declare all family members on your application, even if they do not plan to travel with you to Australia. If not they will not be eligible to come as dependants after you have arrived in Australia.
