Australia has a youthful, vibrant culture and this is reflected in the age of Sydney, Australia’s oldest city.
Established in 1788, Australia’s origins as a penal colony can be seen while touring the rocks or visiting some of our ‘historic’ homes such as Hyde Park Barracks or Vaucluse House. Some things that you might want to see while you’re in Sydney include:
Darling Harbour: Full of cafes, restaurants and nightlife, Darling Harbour is always bursting with energy. Take a walk along the promenade, sit by the harbour, check out the aquarium and the Japanese Gardens.
The Rocks: Watch the world go by while you walk through the sandstone streets, enjoy a glass of Australian wine or cool beer in the arcade or stroll through the markets at the weekend.
Circular Quay: See the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, enjoy the buskers, visit the museum of contemporary art or take a ferry.
The Botanic Gardens: From the Opera House you’re a minutes’ walk away from Sydney’s sprawling Botanic Gardens. Located on the Harbour, the gardens are a great place to meditate or jog and you’ll see people doing both while you’re there.
In the summer you may catch an outdoor concert at the domain, and from there it’s worth walking over to the Gallery of NSW for some culture, and the views from their café.

Taronga Zoo: Catch a ferry over to Taronga Zoo and check out Australia’s unique wildlife while enjoying the view of Sydney Harbour.
Watson’s Bay: Those with a big budget can eat at ‘Doyle’s Seafood Restaurant’. Or, do what the rest of us do and get take away fish and chips, sit on the grass and watch how the other half lives.
Oxford Street (Surry Hills): The hub of Sydney’s ‘queer’ culture and home to the world famous gay and lesbian mardi gras.
Oxford Street (Paddington): Home of Great boutique shopping, cafes and restaurants.
Bondi Beach: Arguably Sydney’s most famous beach, Bondi is always bursting with energy.
Manly: Enclosed by the harbour and the beach and home to Manly corso, a ferry trip to Manly is always a great day out.
The Blue Mountains: Take a day trip out bush and check out the three sisters, the scenic railway and Jenolan caves to name just a few of the attractions on offer.
Sydney is a cosmopolitan city that caters to every taste. Here you can find elegant restaurants around the corner from student haunts and sophisticated nightclubs as well as laid back pubs.
There’s always something to do, if only lying on the beach and working on your tan after you finish work for the day!
